Alphabet Inc.'s Google is advancing its AI cloud capabilities with a new data center project on Australia's remote Christmas Island, according to Reuters. The strategic location—220 miles south of Indonesia—positions the facility as a potential hub for both commercial and defense applications in the Indian Ocean region. Shares of GOOGL rose 2.44% following the announcement.

The initiative includes negotiations for land near the island's airport and potential collaboration with local mining operations for power supply. A proposed SubCom-built subsea cable linking to Darwin WOULD address the island's historically limited connectivity, enabling faster and more reliable data transmission.
